Best area to stay in Bnagkok
« on: August 20, 2012, 07:33:21 PM »
My husband and I (both 27) are going to be traveling to Bangkok in late November and are trying to figure out what neighborhood is best to stay. Budget isn't an issue. Ideally we'd like to be close to the subway/public transportation . Any ideas on good hotels in neighborhoods you'd recommend? For Bangkok we've heard that Sukhumvit is a great area. We appreciate your help!

Sukhumvit and Silom are on the skytrain lines as is the area along Phaya Thai to Jatujak. If you look at hotels on Agoda you can click on the map to see the locations of hotels.

The location here, Sukhumvit Road ( On Nut, Ekkamai , Thong lo , Phrom Phong , Asok , Nana , Phloen chit , Chit Lom ) These places near BTS (Skytrain).
Siam area is fine just too many people , because It's centre of Bangkok.

The fact that you and your husband arre both 27 is neither here there or anywhere . It makes no difference , the different areas are not age seggregated . As Tools4fools pointed out when asking these questions the important thing is to state clearly what you are looking for and need. There is no need to tell us your age.
Being close to SkyTrain is not that bigger deal as it has limited range . Sukumhvit is a long standing tourist area , not sure if it has any particular advantages . Some like it because its the location of some long running clubs and night life.
Some consider Khao San Rd area more central and there is a variety of accomodation , including budget guesthouses in lane and streets off the main steet . Khao San Rd these days is a general tourist street not really a backpacker's street or 'gap year' street as some posters portray it . Away from the street itself there are many quiet areas. Transport is not a problem there are boats down the river that lead to downtown , and bus routes that meet up with Sky Train stations.
The guidebook will also give you a run down on what the different areas of Bangkok are like.

Walking from KSR to a pier then catching a boat then catching the skytrain is a long disjointed process and KSR food is diabolical. Unless you want to stay near the Grand Palace there's little reason to stay over that side of the city. Stay around Suk/Silom/Victory you have quicker skytrain access, closer to the major shopping centres and nightlife for adults who aren't hippies.

Sukumvit Thonglor area is good because it is on the Skytrain line and in an area with upscale housing on the side sois, much local color, significant Japanese food, a diversity of activities etc.

Plenty of good bars in Banglumpoo even a couple on Kowsan road that are hippy / farang free. I agree though it's quite cut off from the rest of the city and involves either a long bus journey, ferry + subway ride or a taxi journey that always involves lots of traffic to pretty much anywhere you might want to go. The area has it's ups and downs but I would never recommend anyone staying on kowsan it's self.
