Railey beach will be happening. Rayavadee resort will usually put on a big firework display that you won't see, but it lights up the sky and you get great views of the outlines of the limestone mountains surrounding the area. If you were to go straight out in a boat a few hundred meters from the beach you might be able to catch the fireworks in the distance.

About Thailand / Re: Islands of Thailand
« on: October 12, 2012, 10:23:57 PM »
Only a couple of "resorts" on this island - the best being "AnyOne beach resort" - a few comfortable (cheap) shacks on the beach and a restaurant that serves great meals at fantastic prices. Swimming is OK - Snorkelling, not really. But if you just want to relax and get away from crowds, this is a great island.

I mean, what's the point in a few trivial tidbits about various islands, much of which can apply to so many? You might get a couple of dozen, then the thread will be buried and lost and will just be one more amongst sooooo many similar until in a few months time another bright spark will come up with this great idea. Yet again.

There's a perfectly good place where info on ALL the islands is together in one thread - it's an LP guide called Thailand's Islands and Beaches and it has more than a couple of lines of subjective twaddle about the many islands.

Patong Beach is the main centre for nightlife in that area so can be fairly noisy, the next beach along Karon Beach is a little quieter, then Kata Beach is even more low key. Think from your comments you will probably prefer Kata..

About Thailand / Re: 1st time in Thailand

Personally, I'd avoid Patong. Instead of getting a flight to Phuket, I'd get the 19.30 sleeper train to Surat Thani and then a bus to Khao Sok National Park (buses leave every hour). After a day or two, head down to Krabi and then go to whatever island you feel like.
You might need to book accommodation in KSNP, but aside from that I'd just play it by ear. Unless you're planning on being there over Christmas, in which case it would be prudent to book ahead in most places.

Never stayed at either, but 'authentic culture' is best experienced by just going into villages and looking around. If they are catering to a westerner so much, it's not going to be authentic.

Consider doing homestays through an NGO.

Also, research human zoo tourism in Thailand to know what NOT to do.

Shopping: Want to Buy / Re: Where to buy Thai silk?
« on: March 17, 2012, 12:13:09 AM »
If your main shopping goal is silk fabric, Bangkok has a much better selection than Chiang Mai. The one place you might want to check out in CM is Shinawatra although I think the price will be pretty much the same as their store in Bangkok. The shopping in CM is good and fun but it's more for craft type things and gift stuff.

The fest is fun as hell. All night. It is a fantastic time to be in Pattaya if you like music. It is also fun to see all of Beach Road blocked off for that weekend. People hang out on the beach til dawn when the music ends.

The best and cheap Massaman I can remember was in Ramkhamhaeng food court.

Mango with sticky rice ... Plus a small bag of coconut juice to pour over it..Lovely...Oh and only 25 baht !
