I'm looking for an 'authentic" hill tribe experience for an upcoming trip to Chiang Rai:

Never stayed at either, but 'authentic culture' is best experienced by just going into villages and looking around. If they are catering to a westerner so much, it's not going to be authentic.

Consider doing homestays through an NGO.

Also, research human zoo tourism in Thailand to know what NOT to do.
